The INFJ Struggle: Why We Overcomplicate Everything (and How to Stop)

INFJs can be deep thinkers, idealists, and champions of all things that feel meaningful. But sometimes, our introspective nature and desire for understanding can lead us down a rabbit hole of complexity. We take a simple situation and turn it into a multi-layered labyrinth of “what-ifs” and hidden meanings. Sound familiar?

If you’re an INFJ, you’ve likely experienced the frustration of overcomplicating things. A grocery store run turns into an analysis of social dynamics in the cereal aisle. A casual conversation becomes a philosophical exploration of human connection. Don’t get me wrong, our ability to see things from multiple angles is a strength. But there’s a tipping point where it becomes counterproductive.

So, why do we do it?

Here are a few reasons:

  • Fear of Missing Something: We worry that if we don’t consider every possible outcome, we’ll make a mistake. This can lead to analysis paralysis, preventing us from taking action.
  • The Need for Meaning: INFJs crave meaning in everything they do. We might overcomplicate situations in an attempt to find deeper significance.
  • Introverted Processing: We process information internally, which can lead to overthinking and rumination.

How to Break the Cycle:

The good news is, there are ways to break free from the overcomplication cycle:

  • Focus on the Present: Instead of getting lost in future possibilities, ground yourself in the present moment. Mindfulness practices like meditation can help.
  • Set Boundaries: Not everything needs a deep dive. Learn to say “good enough” and move on.
  • Externalize Your Thoughts: Talking things out with a trusted friend or journaling can help you gain clarity and perspective.
  • Celebrate Simplicity: Sometimes, the answer is indeed simple. Appreciate the beauty of straightforward solutions.

Remember, being an INFJ is a gift. Our rich inner world and desire for understanding are valuable assets. But by learning to manage our tendency to overcomplicate, we can channel our energy into making meaningful connections and creating positive change in the world.
